Trim Tabs repair and rebuild
It is generally
much easier to
perform this task of the trim tab when in conjunction with the
whole
control. There
are conditions, such as a
Piper PA-24, it is an absolute requirement; the trim assembly
is equipped with
three hinges. It
would be unrealistic to
entertain getting a perfect rivet hole alignment between the
three hinges, such
as incorporated on the Piper PA-24 stabilator assembly.
The PA-24's trim
tab skin is
configured in one piece (many required bends) using 2024-T3
aluminum. We have
found that replacing the original
hinges with new FAA/PMA approved hinges the most effective
solution. Upon
completion, the outer portion of the
hinge is left undrilled.
It is only
when the tab unit is temporarily attached and fitted to the
stabilator, the
trim tab then is drilled and fitted. The
Cessna is far less complicated.
However,
it too is far easier to perform this task when mounted to the
control. The
Beechcraft Musketeer line has a piano
hinge design where the left trim and right trim are both
connected by a single
hinge pin. The
hinge pin must be able to
align itself through both the left and right hinge assembly. Having access to the
stabilator will greatly
enhance the success to accomplish this.
